Reaching the age of 100 is undoubtedly a reason to celebrate with family and friends. But this story is about a nice old woman being surprised by her trash collector, who wanted to celebrate this special lady on her 100th birthday.

When the story of the beautiful friendship between garbage collector Ben Bird and his 100-year-old customer Dorothy Ballard first appeared in the news in 2019, it went viral immediately.

Whenever Ben visits Dorothy, also known as Mercy, at her house in Kidderminster, England, he never forgets to stop and have a friendly chat with her. He has been doing this for the past ten years.

“He talks about his family, and he tells me about his small children,” is what the 100-year-old lady said about the father-of-two.

Dorothy recalled a past conversation she had with Ben. “One day, when his wife had a baby, a little girl, he told me that ‘We’re going to call her Daisy’. What a pleasant surprise, ‘Oh how wonderful, do you know that was also my mother’s name?” I replied.

Mercy opening the door and thanking Ben, according to Ben, was the beginning of their friendship.

“Each week, she makes me laugh and brings a smile to my face,” he continued.

Their friendship touched the hearts of millions after Ben, and his colleagues surprised Mercy on her 100th birthday with a special surprise.

The generous garbage man had promised his most loyal customer, Dorothy, that if she lived to be 100, he would bring her a cake for her special birthday.

So, when Mercy received her telegram from the Queen, as all UK residents do when they turn 100, Ben showed up with a cake and candles to celebrate her wonderful day.

A video of him stepping up to Mercy’s front door, lighting the candles, and singing “Happy Birthday” to her went viral after it was shared on social media.

Ben greets the old grandmother before singing “Happy Birthday to You” with two colleagues and then asks her to make a wish before blowing out her candles.

Thousands of people have left comments on the video, expressing the hope that their friendship will continue.

One person expressed his thought by tweeting, “This restores the faith in humanity.”

Another person added, “Lovely story, Mercy and Ben, may your friendship endure for years to come.”

Ben and Mercy’s friendship is so endearing, and I hope it will continue in the future.
